@ Oenologist:
I know this wont help much but the unidentified piece sounds like Hindemith with a more tonal approach, so it might be Harald Genzmer. I know some of Genzmer's music but the orchestral stuff is quite rare. There are hundreds of Hindemithian composers dotted around Germany in radio orchestras so it might be impossible to find this particular one but I hope Genzmer will point you in the right direction.

Post Can anyone identify this composition?

Hi
I am searching for a composition that I have heard on the radio only a few times. The composer was a member of European royalty. Perhaps it is a symphony but I am inclined to think that it is a piano concerto because of the beautiful piano passages performed quickly in an ascending and descending scale pattern. All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Many thanks -

I don't know the name of the piece and I haven't been able to find it on youtube. It sounds like a Bach piece, but I couldn't be sure. Very similiar to Air, but less melancholy. It's got a repetitive melody, a violin working down a scale. I've sounded it out on my guitar and the notes are posted below.

A B A G F G
A G F E F
G F E D E A A
A D E F G E F E D Db D

That could be Handel's Sarabande in d minor.

Some nagging part of my failing memory is trying to tell me it's also part of his opera Xerxes, but don't count on that. An orchestral version was used in the movie Barry Lyndon.

[Edit: No - not Xerxes. I was thinking of the Largo from Xerxes. This is from one of his keyboard suites, probably with the memorable title Suite for keyboard (Suite de piece), Vol.2, No.4 in D minor, HWV 437.]

So, you imply that this particular piece could have been conceived especially for the needs of this movie, mixed with Grieg, etc.?
Hindemith stuff sounds interesting, any other composers in this vein to be recommended?

Default please name these 2 songs

I'm hoping if I can get the names of these two pieces I can figure out what album the songs came from. They're off an old cassette of a record I recorded back in the 80s, all harp.
So take a listen and name these two songs! thanks.

these links should work, and you should be able to play (instead of download):
