Thank you kindly Jon, I searched and searched and became convinced it was the Minute Waltz Op.64! Which is another wonderful piece of music, the middle section is very similar in terms of mood, though slightly more spritely...

Your help is much appreciated.

Hello,
So I was watching the Leonard Bernstein biography called "Reaching for the Note" (cheesy, I know), and I heard the most beautifully sad melody that has haunted me for weeks. Of course it wasn't listed in the credits, and no one can identify it for me. It is the same theme over and over, a very simple motive. I don't know if this is the correct key, but I've notated the main theme below--if anyone can identify it, I would be eternally grateful!

C Ab Bb C D Eb, Bb Gb Ab Bb C Db, Ab Ab Ab Ab Ab Ab Bb Cb Db.

It's in a slow two (cut time), and the rhythm is: 8th-16th-16th-8th-8th-half, 8th-16th-16th-8th-8th-half, quarter-8th-8th-quarter-quarter-quarter-8th-8th-quarter.

I believe the theme comprises a sequence. I want to say it's Mahler or something, and it must be very well known. All I can say is it is melancholy and mournful, and they play it at the end of the biography as they discuss the end of Bernstein's life.

Evening all,

I'm in Australia and have been mulling over a piece used to advertise a documentary on Orangutans (you read correctly) on the ABC. Typically I cannot remember the name or where I have heard it before now... the part that strikes me familiar is a progression somewhat like this : C B G B C B G B C B G B A

I admit I am tone deaf and my piano is out of tune (neither do I play or read music), so this may well be impressively wrong. The piece is slow, mellow, gently uplifting, and perhaps composed for strings. Any help would be vastly appreciated... the insanity of not knowing is begin to wear thin.
