Ah, I forgot about my beloved Copland's 1st symphony! Some know it in the version with the organ, as the "Organ Symphony" but in my opinion it sounds better without the organ as Symphony no. 1. This is an incredible piece.

Also, Walton's 1st symphony is pretty cool.

    1) Berlioz
    2) Brahms
    3) Mahler

These are the really great first symphonies imo.

I've always liked Shostakovich's 1st as it got me hooked on his Music!

I like the opening bars of Brahms 1 a lot.

I like the closing bars a lot.

I like the bars in between a lot.

Snooty comments suggesting that my liking of Brahms 1 reduces to a few bars - I like not so much.

Yes, I agree with you and Sid James.
Its a fine piece, influenced by Sibelius of course, but very much its own work.
I loke the "scherzo", marked Presto, con malizia, and I think Previn's 1967 recording, one of his first with the LSO, hasn't been beaten.

I vote Brahms, but Beethoven and Mahler are really up there as well.

Berlioz. Debut or not, Symphony Fantastique is very impressive either way.
