    No problems here.

Firefox - OK - logged in. Edge, IE and Chrome - all OK - not logged in.

However, on all 4 get the database error on main forum page when not logged in.

    You can't win them all.

Even more interesting would be to hear from somebody from the technical team about how to deal with the issue (as soon as it appears).

P.S. Actualization. It seems that the issue has attracted some attention of the team.

    Chrome (logged in): no issues
    Edge (logged in): no issues
Edge (logged out): can't even get to the main page, get the error as reported above
    Firefox (logged out): no issues

Agreed it does seem to be mainly when one is not logged in.

I don't normally bother logging in, and I've had trouble gaining access to the site for about 2 weeks, involving the same problem reported by others recently.

I have tried Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, but they all have the same problem. It has nothing to do with the need to clear the cache, or the browswer software being out of date, as I've tried all that and it makes no difference.

For anyone having trouble, the only ways that I've discovered are either:

    (1) type an extra backslash at the end of the usual Talkclassical.com address so that it ends with two backslashes, not just one. This will get you in but if you click on "forum" it throws you off again. I have no idea why this double slash works but it seems to, at least to an extent. Likewise, if you add the name of a particular sub-forum after the usual main address it will log you into that sub-forum.

    (2) Use a VPN based with an IP outside the UK. I discovered this soon after the problem first appeared about 2 weeks ago, as I normally use a VPN, but sometimes I don't bother with the VPN and that's when the problem occurs.

Talkclassical is the only website that I frequent which has this logging in problem. I've googled for a solution but haven't found anything that works apart from the above. The only references I have discovered are very much out of date, and don't help, from which I infer that the problem is very rare.

Incidentally, I've often wondered whether if a number of different members who happen to be using the same VPN could be mis-identified as potential spammers or multi-account holders, as the same IP will presumably be shown on the system board.

Maybe you are logged in all the time, in which case you might not have trouble. Try logging out and then log in again to see what happens. If you can't get logged in, you might try adding an extra slash to the address.

As I wrote above, I have the problem with both Edge and Chrome (I do not use Firefox), and the problem is similar when I am logged in and when I am not logged in. I doesn't do any difference to me, that some members here don't have the problem. The fact, that a number of members here (and not only one) have the problem - and even got it at the same time - means, that it is a systemic error in the forum, or at least a change in the way the forum works, and that it is up to the manager of the forum to correct it, or if - rather unlikely - it is caused by an incompatible setup of our PCs, the manager must find out what is wrong. Actually we are unable to find out.

Well, but I did not think it was possible to stay logged in all the time. Every time I turn my PC off, I am logged out.

This worked, thanks! I installed a Firefox extension which allowed me to VPN with a Netherlands IP, and that got me into the Classical Music Discussion section. However, it's impossible to view the main page of the forum unless I type the two backslashes, like you suggested. Very bizzare!

When you log in, there is a little tick box below the login that says "Remember me" if you tick that you stay logged in all the time. But ... be aware that it is best to log out every so often or just clear your browser cache (which does the same thing) to avoid problems.

Up above, when I posted, I was replying to the poster who asked who didn't have the problem. We are aware of the difficulty and are looking for a fix.

Well, if I type an extra backslash in the address of the Classical Discussion section (after I have been denied access) and press Ent. I get access to it, whether I am logged in or not. So thank you, this works even if it is somewhat akward. But if I type the backslash in the address to the main forum before entering it, the second backslash is automatically deleted, and I have to type it again to get access to the Classical Discussion section.

I have of course tried that before, but it does not work for me. When I turn my PC off, I am always logged out. I have tried to ask the CCleaner to keep the Forum cookie, and I have tried not to clean cookies at all, but it makes no difference.

I'm glad you found it useful.

To clarify the point for others, if you type an extra backslash after the usual address, thus: "...com//", it should get you without further ado. However, that's only a partial fix because if you then click on "Forum" at the top of the page (next to "Articles") it throws you off immediately. To overcome this, I found that if you log in, and stay logged in when you finish, it should allow normal logging in next time.

Alternatively, as I said before, you can try one of the VPNs, and (as I found out) if you select a server in another country from the one you're in then that normally works without the need for a double backslash. The problem, of course, is that if multiple users happen to be using same VPN and same server then they will all give the same IP address, and this cause some false alert errors by the Admin team.

When this log in problem first occurred about 2 weeks ago I thought that the site was down for everyone due to a technical problem. However, because it went on for several days I began to wonder if the Site Owner may have decided to chuck it all in, what with all the grief vented lately by various people regarding the "rules".

A little bit of research, however, found that this wasn't the case, so I began to "google" for a possible fix to the log in problem. I couldn't find anything that was useful. That was strange, as normally one can find fixes for standard problems of this type from various sources. Then began quite a bit of experimentation until I stumbled across the double backslash solution.
