I do think you need approval for this.

My friend The Clarinetist's interest in Lang Lang is not benign. "Dismayingly narcissistic interpretive judgement."
I spent a fortune on deodorant before I realized that people don't like me anyway.

I think you need approval to even mention Lang Lang here!

His recording of Mozart concertos isn't bad. My hope is that this shows there's actually a musician in there trying to get out.

I have one (One!) Lang Lang CD in my collection . It was part of a press kit CD/DVD promotional package I received from one of my friends. He didn't want it. The CD is with Vadim Repin and Mischa Maisky performing Rachmaninov's Trio élégiaque no. 1 in G major, and Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio in A minor. The DVD is a ten minute recording of their rehearsals in 2009. Perhaps I will listen to it someday...

I can never see why all this vitriol concerning Lang Lang. Obviously anyone who is successful like he is must be viewed with great suspicion. We see people banging on on this site about the lack of interest of young people in classical music and then when we get a young man who actually generates interest, all he gets is sneered at by those who reckon they are experts. Of course the same thing happened to Horowitz and Glenn Gould. Oh, and a bit before that, there was a guy called Franz Liszt who was a dreadful populariser of music. Such people should be shot at birth!
Let Lang Lang get on with it - if the elite here do not like him 1000s do! And are listening to classical music because of him.

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY! All this time,I thought that the phenomenon of "hate-the-artist-because-he-is-so-popular-never-mind-if-he-is-actually-talented" happens only in pop music (Madonna, Taylor Swift, One Direction). Maybe if Lang Lang is not so popular, he will earn the respect that he actually deserves

Success does not always equate to quality; the very opposite is true sometimes. Modern-day marketing hype can be very effective to those who know no better. Lang Lang has enjoyed some very effective hype over the years (just as Katherine Jenkins, Andrea Bocelli and Adele have). Unfortunately, artists like this generate the wrong sort of interest, making people think that, in listening to these stilted, second-rate (at best) performances, they are getting the 'real deal'. This does classical music no favours.
Lang Lang has an astounding technical ability, it's true, but MUSICALLY he lacks any artistic judgement or stylistic integrity; it's all about HIM, his image, his flouncing and his gurning.

The only thing that makes him stand out compared to others is popularity.
His interpretations can be distorted and exaggerated and I think his technique is not better than any other of the finest virtuosos.
