Ahhh, I am myself torn between my love for biology and for music! So I've decided on a major in science and minor in music. Perhaps premedical/bio? Don't have much time to choose, no, not at all....
Well, good luck with both biology and music! By the way, which era/composer(s) do you like? :)

    Hi emiel,
I just realized that I haven't replied to your message. I got a two CD set of Perlemuter's Ravel a while back and it is still my go-to-set for the solo works. The sound is surprisingly high quality, which is really important for Ravel. Since it's pretty cheap on Amazon, I suggest you go for it. I think the brilliance of his interpretations will speak for themselves.

"Team member Nick Goldman said the molecule was an incredibly dense storage medium. One gram of DNA ought to be able to hold about two petabytes of data, he added - the equivalent of about three million CDs."

That's pretty insane. I did wonder if the article would be more about pure information storage or if there was some stranger implication, like making us all walking libraries readable to their advanced machines(would be cool in a way). Pretty much cleared that up since the code is incompatible. Very interesting though. Thanks!

I think this is some of what I was thinking of...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protein_music Susumu Ohno was the one who got really interested in this. The idea is to somehow find a system equal to our modern harmonic system, in which a look at a particular fragment of DNA can reveal a piece of music or something. My post was partly a joke, I have not really researched this further, but I found the idea very fascinating nonetheless. Make of it what you will and if you uncover anything interesting or can explain this better to me based on this, let me know.

Edit: here is some kind of website with maybe a catalogue of different researchers in this esoteric area: http://www.mimg.ucla.edu/faculty/miller_jh/gene2music/previouswork.html

    Hi Emiel,

You expressed interest in an article a while back about DNA and music. I've been lazy about searching for it, it was one of those things that I discussed with my mom after she had read it rather than having read it myself. So...I'll get back to you shortly with what I find.

Thank you, emiellucifuge. That's from Joan Peyser's book "The New Music," later revised into "To Boulez and Beyond." I still like the old book, and it can be gotten dirt-cheap on Amazon. I highly recommend it!

    re: jazzy music.
I'm the same way! I don't tend to enjoy much jazz, but jazz-influenced music in other genres I do like. Interesting. :)

Thanks, emiellucifuge. I tend to think in basic terms, and try to gain complete basic understanding of things. For instance, i read several books on the idea of zero, and I like ratios, proportion. I guess that's what you would call an aesthetic form of math. I'll keep on blogging, as long as there is somebody who enjoys it! Thanks!
