    i think you asked me about bolcom on the ned rorem thread.

    i have been enjoying his cabaret songs. very whimsical. as with rorem, mixing high art with the mundane in an ironic way, but also with touch of the surreal. everything is mixed together, from vibes of the crooners like frank sinatra, to puccini, to latin beats. songs about things going on in the office, to a drag queen who likes singing opera, to a couple who've been married for ages but don't really know eachother, to an old mafioso from the 1930's.

    below is a link to the disc i've been listening to, got it last year. canadian soprano measha brueggergosman (bolcom orchestrated these songs esp. for her for this album). the other cabaret songs by schoenberg and satie on the cd are great too.
