May I ask what translation you are using for Tao Te Ching? Yours seems so much more poetic than mine.

re the JS Bach Concertos: some of my issue may be due to the feeling that all the recordings I've heard sound like they don't pull out all the subtlety that might be there. There always seems to be something bothersome about the way its played. Do you have a favorite recording?

Hey, thanks for the friend request!

I'm not actually much of an expert on the Bach cantatas. I'm fond of many of them, but I haven't heard a great variety of recordings. I only nominated this particular one because other people had said they'd support it. But, well, of the recordings I've heard, I'd say I prefer the original version with the male bass voice. It seems a bit too weightless and airy otherwise.

Part II. Message too long - had to break into two

Now I'm not sure what your taste in Mozartian sounds are like, so if you prefer a heavier/fuller/Romantic sound, you might like to try some modern instrument ensembles. The Eder Quartet (Naxos) recorded them all. While I don't have any of these played by The Eder, I do have them playing works by other composers, which I found likable. Or do a search here at TC and see what others recommend.

Quatour Mosaiques is another period instrument version that gets a few mentions. I also have their version of the Six Haydn SQ, but I think I prefer them played by The Salomon as listed above.

    Let me know!

Sure, tdc. I am one of those period instrument fans who tend to listen to Mozart pieces on period instruments most/all of the time. I'm sure there are fine modern instrument approaches/semi-HIP if you prefer. I guess you could start with the most famous of Mozart's SQ, the so-called Six Haydn SQ because he wrote it dedicated to Haydn as you probably already know.

    The Salomon String Quartet

He wrote six SQuintets: the first was an early piece, the second was a straight arrangement from a wind octet, while the last four where SQuintets that were much more "mature" pieces.

The Salomon String Quartet again plus an extra viola player.

Agree. (Funny how we can discuss such topics even at a classical music website). One of the shows was discussing about lighting in the pyramids: (1) it was untenable that reflective copper "mirrors" were used as it was a rather poor means of reflecting sunlight deep into the structure, (2) fire torches were untenable due to the total lack of soot in the ceiling areas, and the fact that oxygen levels would have been too low to sustain a buring fire with living workers, so ... how else could they have lit up the interior and created a structure of precise granularity? Fascinating. Disclosure on the other big topic would be near impossible, as the economics of our world would fall apart.

Howdy, have you watched the series Ancient Aliens? The whole series are on youtube if you haven't. Interesting. Many far-fetched ideas, others are intriuging, especially the electricity/light-bulb from anicent Egypt idea as possibly depicted by the Dendera lightbulb.
