i had a look at the cd notes to the bax 7th sym. it says it was commissioned by america, for the world fair there. first performed by new york phil. under adrian boult. but it had been started before the commission.
to add to the tragic context of this work, not only war was looming, but also bax's fav poet, w.b. yeats, had just died. but as far as i remember, i don't remember it as a tragic work. certainly the ending of it is in good spirits. but i will listen to it in coming days. good to be remined of it, i basically love it.
