This site seems so slow these days, at least the opera forums.

    Hi,
Yes,, i noticed that. I've been mainly listening to orchestral music mainly
for awhile. Plus have had flu a couple pf times and didnt feel like listening to much.

I was not listening much at all for half the year, but got back into it, mostly late evenings. Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, but now I cycled back to opera and am going through my la fanciulla sets.

Want to get the Beethoven sonatas cycle that Valentina Lisitsa did, it is all on You Tube and Amazon sells it but in about half a dozen separate downloads so would be costly. Meanwhile the Taub sonatas are serving me quite well.

Lately i've been getting into the Scandinavian composer symphonies.
They're a bit expensive, but i'm really enjoying them.
    I buy a set when i can.

Hmmm, not sure about that one. I have a Nielsen symphony cycle but have only listened a couple of times. I think that is Scandinavian? I also have Gade's Elverskud, which I think also is Scandinavian, though not a symphony. I would think they are more expensive just because they are not as popular, so there are fewer recordings available and maybe fewer in number of copies produced.

That Weigle sset of Wagner's first three operas is tempting, but I never listen to them, but maybe part of the reason is dated sets:

Die Feen (Korhonen, Patchell, Sonntag, Kriscak, Sirkiä, Teatro Comunale di Cagliari Orchestra,Ötvös--1998)

Rienzi (Treptow, Eipperle, Prybit, Schlüter, RSO Hessen, Zillig--1950)

Das Liebesverbot (Walter, Zadek, Dermota, Friedrich, Steffek, Großes Wiener Rundfunkorchester , Heger--1963)

It certainly would do justice to those three early operas to have the modern recordings. Also half as much as a used copy on Amazon. Nice deal.

I’ve attended a few of Zinman’s concerts down the years and I think he’s a fine musician. I really enjoy the Beethoven and Schumann sets that I have and I shall think about getting the Mahler

Thanks, Peter. I know the recording. It has many virtues, but I don't enjoy either Dunja Watsername or Peter Hoffmann. If only Karajan had used Christa Ludwig and Jon Vickers it would have been up there with the best. Actually I wish Solti had used Vickers in his recording too. (Dunja V. is even less satisfactory as Senta in Karajan's Dutchman. I don't know what he heard in her.)

By coincidence I'm at their site now. Some great box set sales! I wouldn't mind getting the complete edition for 100 bucks.

 I have a bit more hair than Martin Barre and Ian Anderson combined these days sadly.

Thanks for the re-welcoming message! I'll try to stay around a while this time.

    Hi, Peter -
John & I are well, though we both have some health problems, mainly connected with our eyesight. But we are getting through lockdown okay. The trouble is, it's mildly depressing and I somehow don't feel much like posting on TC or listening to serious music.

How are you getting on? I hope your health is reasonably good, and that you are in good spirits, or good-enough spiritis in the age of covid.

    Very best wishes,
    Mollie & John xx

I won't pay more than £25 for it but I know it rarely dips under £30. Cheapest new I've seen is £20 but that was ages ago. I'm loathe to buy much at the mo because they've bumped a lot of prices up.

It's REALLY expensive usually. Beware too as some are vinyl (all TACET releases get released on vinyl first). The sound is quite strange on the Beethoven 1&2 if I recall. Almost on top of you. Very different soundstage to most recordings I've heard. The Auryn SQs on TACET are similar but it's different as there's only 4 of them so its less noticeable.

Yes, it's one of the few I've yet to get as it's so bloody expensive. It's like Krivine in bits. I have a few of the downloads (I got an offer on two of them 1&2) but really want the whole set. I missed out on a secondhand copy for £15 ages ago and its since leapt up in price. The string sound isn't massive but it's brisk and crisp. Why? If you see it for a reasonable price give me a nudge cos I want it.

I'll be honest I've hardly listened to the Ebene. I got caught up with the String Quartets thread so it's been one Ravel recording after another. I'm Ravelled out. I'm totally with you on the Kodaly. They're a great quartet and their Beethoven is class. The Naxos snobs can scoff but it beats a ton of other sets hands down. The last full set I played was The 1st Tokyo cycle which I still rate as one of the best. I'll get stuck into Ebene this weekend ( I hope).
