Forgive me for asking such an obtuse question, but do you think the bickering is worsening here? It's becoming increasingly irksome and I find that it's crowding out legitimate discussions. And what's worse is that it's always the exact same arguments that have been mounted a hundred times before. I feel like it may be a useful therapy to aggregate all of the threads in the entire archive here that contain the same trite arguments. Considering how many I've seen recently, I suspect that the proposition would be a colossal undertaking.

I wanted to insert this into that "Become Beethoven" thread, but my inhibitions prevented me from doing so. Nonetheless:

Come, come now, Petr. Your incredulity about the incidence of Savant Syndrome is astonishing. Haven't you been paying attention, sir? Everyone on the internet is a superlative genius, scholar, theorist, and polymath. Just look at any expository [news] webpage that has a free comment section [YouTube is a good one, too]!

    I'm back, Petr..........
And you actually may be hearing from Brahms the Scoundrel in a few days, but say no more about that! :D
And, yes, I wholeheartedly agree about traveling. I really can't stay in the same place for a long while, anyway, without a sort of discomfort. I'm pretty used to travel. I'm abroad at least once just about every other year. So business meetings when I enter the field of science should be a pleasure. :)

    Air miles! Oh, if only....

Perhaps I'll be back next week or so. I can't really stay off this thing (TC) anyway.... :D

But sadly, I haven't gotten around to responding to your direct message. Next week, I hope. See you on the forum! :)

I have just finished listening to the Chant du Cygne. You are right. It *is* gorgeous. It makes me ponder the very nature of sound. In places it reminds me of the wind piping through the hollow iron railings at the Kilt Rock on the Isle of Skye. :) Truly majestic & pleasingly mournful harmonies. Thank you, Petr! :tiphat:

Probably not a great recommendation for that thread, but I'm fond of Piano Distance, composed primarily under the influence of Webern and Cage during Takemitsu's flirtation with the European avant-garde in the 60s. Not serial, but has a similar texture.

I'll contribute to the thread in a bit, though, thanks for the invitation.

You mean the "black-note" pentatonic, right? Japanese traditional music uses a number of pentatonic scales, one of which is heard at the beginning of Litany. Romance (I think the earliest surviving Takemitsu work? He destroyed several earlier ones) is almost entirely pentatonic, with a few notes added mostly to thicken the texture with minor seconds.

Personally, I also find concert music that never, or rarely, strays from the "black-note" pentatonic somewhat cloying, especially when used in imitations of exotic music by Westerners.

You make me laugh, PetrB! I think your posts on this forum are wonderful! :)
Yes, contemplating a major/minor in music is certainly saying something about my age. Nothing personal. ;)
So first you went to the conservatory, then the university. May I ask which one? I have been considering many colleges/universities, and I will definitely be trying for Yale, Stanford, other colleges in California, and I am considering going to Toronto for a major in biology/the premedical program. So if the college that I end up going to offers a good minor in music (I am pretty sure that Yale does, at least. I have been there to see it, but nobody mentioned music. I should have asked), then I will most likely minor in that. I do not think that I will be majoring in music, though....

Minor in music! And that says nothing about my age! (But if you really want to believe that I am still in high school, feel free.... :D ) Well, I'm not denying anything. But I think that I will not major in music. But minor? I am definitely just aching to do so. :) As for my age, I know that there is a gender gap between the members at TC, and my several years' exposure and knowledge of classical music should not be either overestimated or underestimated by my age.... Now, I am not saying that I am 10 years old, but I am certainly not 50 just yet. :) I can argue actively on the forum concerning many subjects, and I believe that my opinion is at least somewhat valued on some subjects. Let us just say that I am at the age to be able to decide what the future will be. And I think that I have. If all continues well with music for the short period between now and when I must officially decide, I think I will minor in music.
How did you decide to major in music (i.e. what influenced you)?

    PetrB,

I do, in fact, and have taken formal piano lessons for quite a long time! By "study music," I meant studying music in a college/university/conservatory! :) But yes, I understand that "glaring gap" which you talk about. In truth, I do not listen to very much of the Baroque era. But that's what makes classical music itself so interesting. If we all had the same taste in music, there would only be one type of music, and that would be quite boring. As for 20th century music, I listen to some on occasion, but I love the Classical Era! Beethoven is excellent! I enjoy his sonatas very much.
Chopin, I enjoy immensely, especially when I need a break from heroism and passion. :D His piano works are wonderful, especially his nocturnes!
And who knows? Maybe I will minor in music.... I also sing, and have a professional mentor for that. I am a soprano, though I am told that I could also sing alto. Have you done any singing/choir accompaniment? Did you ever want to? :)

Oh! As for PetrB, I assume your name is Petr B.... As for me.... Mstar is the first initial of my name, then the rest is just an odd name my sister made up for me off the top of her head years ago.... I suppose it stuck.... For a long time.... ;)
I have been playing the piano for several years, and somewhat secretly want to study music, though I am much more of a "science" person. If I am in a public place and near a piano, I subconsciously stare at it, wanting to play it.... I'm a passionate person for music. Especially the Romantic Era. And you? Do you like a specific era? :)

I honestly must say.... You end your posts with "best regards," which happens to be a personal favorite.... Nobody uses it these days! It's so elegant, though....
Wow, okay, I should have posted that on the derailing-off-topic thread.... :)
You are a musician? What instrument do you play? :)
