This question will be easier for people from the UK and those who can view BBC iPlayer.

There was documentary on BBC4 last night called Krautrock: The Rebirth of Germany and in it a piece of classical music was played to portray Germany's musical heritage pre-war. I'd guess at it being either Wagner, Bruckner, Richard Strauss or Mahler but am not sure.

Anyway, the piece starts at about 3 minutes into the documentary.

I think there is another classical piece played later on but can't remember.

Also, the documentary is just an interesting watch for anyone interested in bands like Can, Neu, Kraftwerk, Popol Vuh, Faust, Tangerine Dream and the general birth of electronic music in Germany.
