It's quite a lot of work & it would certainly be a challenge but if enough people were interested & were willing to help & contribute I'm sure it could be resurrected. I'd certainly take part.

You'd need admin rights to edit & update the poll & maybe the Moderators have a view on this?

Well, we could, but I recall that it was a massive undertaking involving a lot of collating and maths. We'd need to have a good level of participation before we did this! Expressions of interest please!

I personally would vote differently in some cases because I have watched about 200 productions since we did this last poll.

    And yes I am bankrupt.

Yes, I'd change my vote on some operas, and wouldn't need to pass on some others as I've since added them to my collection. (I still think I should buy Amazon stock . . .)

As a possible solution to revising the master list...would it be reasonable to start a new best of list for upcoming years 2014, 2015, 2016 at the end of each year....narrowing it down to a manageable number of selections??
...or is this available elsewhere on the forum and I just haven't found it.....
    as I'm new here!

This one's going onto the wishlist.

I wish San Fran Opera sold their stuff on amazon, though.

    ETA: Found it. https://www.amazon.com/Kern-Hammerst...ords=show+boat

Cost a few extra bucks over ordering from SFO. But I'll bet it arrives a lot faster. I ordered it.

The San Francisco Opera got a wonderful Lucretia Borgia also.
    Staring ; Renée Fleming .

It's time to start buying some CDs. I love the streaming option, but it doesn't come with the Libretto or any liner notes at all.

Just got my shipping notice for this CD set. I would have paid for a New one (to be a supporter and all), but the Like New was half the price.

    IMO - good choice.

I've bought/heard lots of versions of Rigoletto in my time but I always come back to this one. Love it.

Ava's one of the all-time beauties, for sure!

But for that song, I prefer the 1936 version:

I meant that streaming the recording of any opera isn't going to provide liner notes and libretto.

(Not just Rigoletto - but on that topic, this version's only available on the streaming sites in highlights anyway, as best I can find.)

    I understand.

I do love the Philips series of box sets like this one.

Speaking of Librettos: I have been building an amazon wishlist of CD sets to buy over the next few months. I see that sometimes they say, "Includes CD-Rom with libretto". Does the extra disc contain a PDF? It must because otherwise how would they expect you to play and audio CD and also run the libretto CD at the same time.

It seems like it would be more cost effective to print an access code in the booklet so that people could go download the PDF from the record company's website. Adding a whole extra CD is a waste of money and space. (Like those DVDs that used to come with an mp4 copy of the movie on a whole extra disc.)

The ones I've got which have a CD-Rom included are downloadable as a pdfs. Before EMI was broken up, they had a site where you could access and download lots of libretti as pdf. I managed to get all of them before EMI folded. They didn't do synopses and history but libretti was better than nothing.

Screen shot of Don Carlo libretto as example. Click to enlarge.
