Arrow The watch begins in Boston

With the announcement earlier this month that James Levine will be stepping down as Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the inevitable speculative conclave-watching has begun.

The name that seems on more lists than any other is Riccardo Chailly. I'm sure I wouldn't mind him if he wanted to come... but I can also see some reasons why he wouldn't want to try it.

An interesting, not-entirely-expected suggestion was James Conlon- but then, he would become the third consecutive Ravinia Festival Music Director to ascend to the podium in Boston.

With three of the four biggest American metro areas containing orchestras that went "youth movement" [Gilbert in New York, Dudamel in LA & Nézet-Séguin in Philly], will the BSO follow suit?!

When Levine's concerts were cancelled because of sickness they had Roberto Abbado randomly come in and conduct a couple of weeks ago. A trial run perhaps? The orchestra sounded phenomenal under him, so he might be a possible candidate.

Chailly is already bery busy with his current post with the Gewandhaus orchestra in Leipzig, and the two seem to have a great relationship . I don't know if he would want to leave Leipzig or if it would be feasable for him to do both Boston and Leipzig.
The rising young Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons, a protege of Maris Jansons, had considerable success in Boston recently, and who knows if they might take a gamble on him?
Philadelphia recently took a gamble on Nezet-Seguin. We;ll have to waut and see.
