I have just got my copy and compared it a while with the old Unitel-version. Sorry, my english is not first rate, I‘m german. There are only slight differences. The picture is a bit darker, the black is blacker, the colours more intense. The contours are more or less sharp, as before. There are the same after-images(?)
The sound is more sonorous, but again only a bit. I don‘t have any surround system, so I can only judge the LPCM Stereo sound. I listen with (very good) headphones.
There was one moment of shock. The third scene in the third act of Siegfried sounds like an old mono-recording. Terrible! But with the 5.1 dolby it‘s okay.
The case is the same small, a bit spartan one of the 7 disc version, okay it looks slightly more elegant.
By the way, my copy is not only Region 1, it has ‘All Regions‘.
I think it‘s not a must have.....only for really big fans, like me

Even if the picture quality is only slightly better than old 7 DVD set it is still a huge benefit in USA becuase the price is so cheap now, $58 new at Amazon USA sellers! Some joker is trying to sell the old set for $1500.......good luck

Agree the packaging in one large DVD case is kinda cheap looking, Amazon USA is selling an all region set

Yes there is a small booklet included, DVDs themselves have some additional info in production featurette, great price!

Must find out if blu ray will be offered, because this is a 2 DVD set often the blu ray will fit on 1 disc and offer better picture and sound for same (or less) price, Amazon USA does not show this option yet

    Wait...........
trip to DG website answers my question that about 3 weeks after 2 DVD release a 1 disc blu ray will be released.
Keep your powder dry my friends
Amazon USA now shows a release date for this blu ray 12/20/2011 for $28, other Amazon sellers may be less when released

Presto UK has it now for $26 (only $3.20 shipping to USA almost same as Amazon local shipping)

It's in the post to me, arriving soon. I LOVE presto classical's sales and low postage rates (Not sure my bank manager is so enthusiastic).

What about the new DVD of Mozarts Die Zauberflote from La Scala? It has some unfamiliar names (too me). The only singer i have on DVD is Alex Esposito. The cast include Albina Shagimuratova as the Queen of the Night, and Italian bass Alex Esposito as Papageno.

Any views? Has it been shown on European arts channels?

I guess any new production/DVD of this opera should be welcomed. It will be hard to beat my absolute favourite DVD from Zurich with Harnoncourt conducting. Christoph Strehl as Tamino and Ruben Drole as Papageno.
