This most recent installment of the one-on-one match countdowns series is devoted to works in the key of G major. We will be selecting 16 works on an interactive basis.
Here are the selection rules:
1. You may pick up to 3 selections each day but not more than 1 selection per composer.
2. Once you make a particular selection, you may not make that selection again. If and when that selection is also picked by 2 other members, it will be game-ready.
3. When 16 works become game-ready, the selection process will cease and the game will begin.
4. Please use the format as displayed below.
My three picks for today:
Dvorák - String Quartet no. 13, op. 106 (1)
Mozart - Piano Concerto no. 17 (1)
Schubert - Piano Sonata, D 894 (1)
I have mixed feelings about Bach's Goldberg Variations, but it is correct that all the variations are in G major except for three that are in G minor.
Anyone have an opinion on this?
Well, I think it works because most other works mentioned in this game, are not 'homotonal' like Haydn's La Passione. They have middle movements that are not in G major. Ravel for example, has his slow movement in E major. The Classicists invariably have theirs in the subdominant key (C major in this case) or the relative minor key (E minor in this case). So, if you think of the individual variations in the Bach as 'movements', - it doesn't matter what key they are in as far as this game is concerned. G major and G minor are parallel keys and have the same tonic anyway.
Glazunov - String Quartet no. 3, op. 26 "Slav Quartet" (1)
Haydn - String Quartet op. 77 no. 1 (3)
Respighi - Suite in G Major for String Orchestra and Organ (1)
