I've always struggled with Britten, including his own recording of this work. This recording is fantastic. I just may become a Britten fan through it.
I love the music, but I also think he was a singular genius in his choice of librettists. The book for this opera is a poem on its own. This is one of the few works in which I can tolerate Vickers crooning. But he seems possessed by this character and there is nothing in any other recording that is more mesmerizing than his "now the Great Bear...." aria. I was fortunate to hear him perform this in Dallas long ago.
