Two of my favorite Stokowski stories occurred when he was well-advanced in years -

I loved it when, at age c 92, he signed a 20 year recording contract with Decca[??] !! Now, that is optimism!!

at around the same time, he was doing an interview for some publication or other - the interviewer asked him - something like:
<<of all the thousands upon thousands of performances you given, what is the most important one to you??>>

    Stoki: "The next one"...

One of my most powerful musical memories is of sitting in the choir seats on the platform of the Royal Festival Hall. Stokowski and the Philharmonia Orchestra performed Wagner's Rienzi Overture, Scriabin's Poem of Ecstacy and the Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique.

I was close enough to be able see the players' parts. They all bore a stamp saying "Property of Leopold Stokowski" and appeared to be liberally covered with pencilled instructions.

The only Englishman known to have shaken hands with Mickey Mouse.
