Thread: Danielle Gatti

I've never heard Danielle Gatti live and his recording lecacy is not so wide, but I've heard some good fragments on youtube (e.g. the Tannhauser overture with het Concertgebouworkest).

What do you think of him as a conductor of operatic ans symphonic music (Wagner, Mahler, Berg). Had you visited his performances? Any personal impressions?

BTW, I hope to visit his Meistersingers in Salzburg in 2013. So, I am very interested on hearing your opinions on him, but certainly not only in opera.

I only know Daniele Gatti through some recordings. About 15 years ago, he made some waves with Resphigi. Okay, but not nearing the Dutoit or Reiner recs. Some years later, his Tchaikovsky received favorable notice. I thought they were distinctly lightweight, and competitive with no one. The Berg, similarly so. Mahler 4 is worthwhile, maybe his best rec. to date.

This is a conductor I would forget, if I were you...and pay more attention to Pappano and Harding, to name just two on ascent.

I disagree with the last post. I think that Gatti is a good conductor I have got his Elektra blu ray from Salzburg and thought the conducting was exceptional. I have heard him in Mahler live with the Philharmonia and thought he was good and a lot better than some people like Maazel. I will also him conduct Falstaff at the Royal Opera House next month.

I can see Gatti when I want since I live in Paris and he is the permanent conductor of the Orchestre national de France. And since he started his tenure, the orchestra which started already at a low level (Dutoit and Masur were no great conductors and the orchestra was badly managed by the radio which administers it) has become catastrophic. Some concerts are good (and this is quite frustrating because you can never plan which concert in the season will be the good one among so many others) but most of them are boring. In addition, the programs are really dull, next year they do the complete Beethoven & Brahms symphonies. Really, on the Debussy year All this is not only Gatti's responsibility, but anyway he produces boring performances (except on rare occasions) and, even when he shows more involvement, his lacks technique, which brings surprizing accidents for professionals (at the Proms 2 years ago, a big mistake in Le Sacre).

The other radio orchestra (Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France, conducted by Myung-Whun Chung), which has always had smaller finances is now clearly the best orchestra in Paris with the orchestra of the Opéra national...

I'll be happy when Gatti will be gone elsewhere...
