All-time favourites, Kleiber, Monteux, Barbirolli, Furtwängler, Beecham and Giulini. Nobody whom I would go out of my way to avoid but I have yet to hear anything by Solti that has bowled me over. In the modern era, I do think that Vasily Petrenko will go on to become a true great, if he keeps his mouth shut!

Solti recordings that have bowled me over: 1. The Decca Ring 2. LSO recordings of the Mahler 1, Russian Overtures. It's a matter of taste but Solti was one of the best in my opinion.

The 'other' Petrenko - Kirill - is well on his way to being one of the greats ... and he doesn't have the same foot-in-mouth disease as Vasily It appears from what I have seen and heard about him, Kirill is that very rare thing, a conductor who is a shy person!
