Haitink and Mahler Tragic
In the past decade, I have been hearing Haitink perform Mahler with respect and admiration. I was stunned by his Berliner Philharmoniker readings of the Titan, Resurrection, Purgatorio (Third) and now the Tragic (Sixth). Simply magnificent! These are sufficient words! This performance by Chicago of 2008 takes its place behind Solti/ Chicago, Bernstein/Wiener, Karajan/Berliner as the fourth best reading!

Assuming this is the same one as my CD recording it is indeed a fine performance and I was unaware it had been filmed as well, but Tennstedt's LPO performance recorded live by the BBC in 1983 is, in my opinion, equally effective although of a different kind of intensity (and allowing for both the comparatively inferior sound quality AND the attention-seeking plonker who shouts 'BRAVO!' with appallingly indecent haste at the music's end). Bernstein's VPO studio recording remains my favourite No. 6, though.
