Default Swore to myself I'd never start a topic in this subforum...

    Two things:

    1. If you can, I'd like a list of every major film and television series to feature the main theme of the first movement of Beethoven's third cello sonata (A major, Op. 69). Listening to that for what seemed like the first time, it seemed extremely familiar, as though it were a common piece of music to use in film. That led me to try to discover where I might have heard it, which led me to...
    2. If it's a piece of classical music (and not just composed for the show), I'd like to know the origin of the music played by the string quartet at the ball in the Firefly episode "Shindig." I'd give a YouTube link, but I can't find one. If you have Netflix or Amazon Prime, you can stream it. Music starts around 11:30 and continues throughout the episode.

That sounds like a fat undertaking Kopa. The only reason I happened upon this thread is because I searched on google for "Firefly talkclassical," to see if that show has already been discussed somewhere.

Ah, but I just watched the shindig episode. Those are Haydn string quartets at that ball, about that I'm certain, and I recognized a fragment. I'd have to re-watch the episode.

Edit: right as the rich dude, I forget his name(edit, Afferton), says to Inara, "oh its not that undefinable"(when she said, I must be losing my undefinable allure), a little over 12:30 into it on my netflix version, this piece which I know and love starts up:

The lighter fare string quartet music before may be from the same piece, but it can't be from that movement as it lacks that permeating theme, though the time signature lines up, also it is in G major whereas this is in D major. It might be the minuet of that quartet, let me check. I am starting to think that there are different Haydn quartets involved in this episode. The other G major string quartet music is not from the opus 76 set, I think.

And on this matter, a short list maybe? Nothing comes to mind.

In addition to Haydn, there is definitely also the 4th movement of Beethoven's Op. 130 string quartet in the ball episode of Firefly.
