    Default Speakers... Need recommendations

@conclass recently posted a thread about headphones and this inspired me to ask about speakers. I am looking to purchase speakers for a smallish room (let's say ~17ft2X17ft2). What is the best quality speakers I could get for up to $200-$250 for listening to Classical Music? I realize there are far more expensive options but, alas, I am but a poor student.
Thanks in advance to anyone who knows about this sort of thing. Links are welcome.
    Cheers

I am in love with my BIC America DV62 Venturi series speakers. They're a little known brand but are consistently highly rated. Read the reviews on Amazon: They perform like speakers three or four times their cost.

I don't understand those dimensions. Is the room approximately 17ft by 17ft? If so, better go with headphones.
I spent a fortune on deodorant before I realized that people don't like me anyway.

I'm very happy with my Klipsch Promedia 2.1's.

What is the rest of your system, especially the source; CD, vinyl, downloads?

I run a pair of Pioneer floorstanders in my office, that is about the same size (given it's 17by17 feet) as your room.
The model is called SP-FS52 and they sound awesome with most classical music on this side of the largest cathedral pipe organs (something that I dig).
The quick search I just did, shows that they can be had in the US for $250/pair or slightly above from several outlets fx. Best Buy and Amazon.

I'm using a 20 watt tube amp (EL84's) and an old desktop PC with a HRT MusicStreamer HD USB-DAC to stream music from my NAS.

I would go with old favourite for small enclosures the Wharfedale Diamond 10.1

All these speakers are good suggestions so far, but I recommend you make sure the amp or receiver is a good match as far as impedance and sensitivity. Or will u be using a computer with a pair of external speakers?
    Very simply stated...
Output current; the power of the amp measured in watts.
Impedance is the resistance of the load; 4 ohm or 8 ohm speakers.
Sensitivity is how loud the speakers will be.

Thanks all, I'm sorry for my delayed response but I had some pressing personal matters to attend to for the last few day. In any case, I appreciate the suggestions listed. Allow me to clarify a few points:
#1- Yes, I mistakenly wrote 17ft2X17ft2 but meant 17x17 ft
#2- As for the source of the music, I was thinking of using my computer. Please forgive my ignorance, but is that a bad thing? I am a bit of a newbie regarding speakers, etc. The closest thing I've ever had to speakers was my old boombox
If I were to use an amplifier would that be in someway better? If so, would I have to get a CD player or something? Again, I apologize if these are stupid questions but we all have to start somewhere I suppose.
    Cheers for the help.

'Logitech' and 'Creative' have great speakers and aren't too expensive awaiting for you!

I use a computer as the source in both my systems, it works fine and you can start out by using the built in sound card/line out to drive the amplifier.
If You want to drive the speakers direct You will need to get "active" speakers (ie. with built in amps), like the ones that Logitech or Creative mentioned above, or something from a speaker specialist that is listed as a wireless speaker.

Unfortunately I don't have a clue to what recommendable in this category of equipment...

This is such a "subjective" question
My audio "heaven" could be your hell
My suggestion is to listen to as many different combinations as you can
Play music you like, so you have an idea of what you want it to sound like
Try to find an outlet that lets you try lots of different combinations
