On advice of hpowders I am scoping out the Solti set. I have it ordered from a neighboring city's library to be picked up at my local library. If I really like it over and above my Neuhold set, then I will seek out a used set online.
Want to keep busy? Comparative listening: the complete Ring: Karajan vs. Solti. Both were considered THE studio Ring recordings of about 40-50 years ago.

The Solti set was held up as a demonstration of state of the art recorded sound of the time and has been highly praised by a majority of Wagnerians.

Good on him, the music is exiting, but then again, I don't have to tell you that.

The tipping point was this video someone recommended to me. A little understanding goes a long way.

It's not bad but it wouldn't be my first choice. But if you saw it for a really good price you wouldn't be disappointed. I hesitate to make Ring recommendations because each one reveals something that others sometimes don't. At the moment I am listening to the '51 Met Ring conducted by Stiedry. The singing is exemplary and I am thoroughly enjoying it but again it wouldn't be a Ring that would make it into my top five.

This thread wasn't a poll, but I tallied up everyone's selections. I did not pay attention to rankings, and I skipped a few duplicate posts. There were a couple references to the Barneboim/Kupfer DVD; I included those with the CD.

    The top 7:

    1. Keilberth 1955 Bayreuth - 10
    2t. Solti, Decca - 9
    2t. Barenboim, 91/92 Bayreuth - 9
    4. Krauss, 1953 Bayreuth - 8
    5. Böhm, 66/67 Bayreuth - 6
    6t. Karajan, Deutsche Grammophone - 5
    6t. Furtwängler, 1953 RAI - 5

9 other Rings got votes, none of them more than 2.

There are a couple of these on Ebay for about $7-9 more than I paid, but I just do not like the packaging on this set:

As for the 2-CD intro. I am terrible at paying attention to narrative on CD. I have to read to pay attention.
