More on Membran/EMI. Yes, the Callas studio recordings are out of copyright in the EU (not the US). But EMI's *digital transfers* are very much in copyright; EMI and new owner Warner are eager to sue (hence the disappearance of the nice Myto live Pirata: they got caught lifting the EMI remaster of the Amsterdam Pirata finale for their bonus tracks). LP transfers, like the nasty Naxos, are PD: the LPs themselves are no longer in copyright throughout much of the EU (though the law has changed so their copyrights have recently been re-extended from 50 to 75 [?] years; arsvocalis knows the specifics). I think Membran licensed the ugly 1997-2003 EMI CD masters, and issued them cheaply, just as EMI did in 2005; everyone wants to get rid of them. The things Membran issued that don't appear on EMI, like live Vestale, are of unknown origin; that Membran's Vestale is good is a fluke.

Then go to Second Spin: http://www.secondspin.com/

This online retailer is meant for people to sell their used and unwanted CDs and DVDs and exchange them for cash. What Second Spin does thereafter with your unwanted stuff has nothing to do with you anymore.

of course it does. If I knowingly sell pirated issues knowing Second Spin will sell them on I am guilty by association. In any case you have not explained why Membran is a pirate.

Another retailer to use out of copywriter material is Regis. I have to say beware of some of the stuff. I bought Furtwangler's Fidelio and the transfer is awful!

Well, since the Callas studio materials are out of copyright and free for grabs by any retailer, I admit I should not have been so vindictive and used the term "pirate" to describe the Membran set, let along other retailers that reproduced the out-of-copyright materials.

What you want to do with the Membran set (still keeping it, or selling it out) is something that is entirely up to you. I have come up with the suggestion that you could consider selling it, but the final decision is all yours.

Let's settle our conversations on the issue herewith.

The Callas *LPs* are PD in the EU. The Callas EMI digital transfers of any period are *in copyright* and one copies them for sale without permission at legal peril from Warner which now owns all of the EMI materials. Membran licensed the ugly 1997-2003 EMI digital re-EQs for their 2005 [?] set. Pity no one licensed the 1986-90 EMI transfers for reissue, a number of which I actually prefer to Warner (and, of course, were made when the tapes were thirty years newer).

It would have been really nice, as you said, had Membran chosen to clone the 1986-90 EMI transfers instead, and perhaps even more importantly, clone them properly. But as Azol's feedback on Membran's awful transfer of 1997 EMI reissue of the 1956 Karajan TROVATORE indicates, Membran couldn't even clone properly, thus ending up with a shoddy product. So, phew! What a relief I didn't buy the Membran set. I guess those who had bought it are now having a cracking headache over what to do with it (or how best to get rid of it).

It seems like buying this set is a 'fool's bargain' especially when you can get the discs pretty cheap second hand from the Amazon site with a bit of looking and patience. Just bought Callas' Aida for £3 including the postage!

OMG, our darling Marschallin has been exiled to outer Mongolia again for being too "ebullient"! We'll miss her dearly at least for another two weeks. Hope it could be possible to get AFF back from her sabbatical leave and post more stuff from her Callas archive in order to keep this thread alive. But she is probably on trip now.

You're kidding me!!!! The passive/aggressives seem to get away with murder, whilst someone with a bit of life and personality is sent into exile. What is this? Keep the forum as boring as possible?

This could possibly be the reason why our dearest Marschallin has been sent into exile again (sorry, Mr Super Moderator, please kindly allow me to quote you directly so that other members will be able to know what happened):

From the "Help me decide whether to 'give up' on Wagner, R. Strauss, Bruckner based on EMI HvK" thread (under "Classical Music Discussion" group):

After reading the thread I don't understand why MB got banned. I thought MB's posts where all right. At least Ididn't spot any political discussion on the whole thread. The thread did get a bit off topic, but that happens to allmost every thread. It just doesn't seem fair. Maybe we should start a thread to get MB back. Hopefully my revolutionary idea doesn't get me banned

Moreover, opera is and has always been about politics and religion: e.g., UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, DON CARLO, NABUCCO, TOSCA, etc.; and many composers--aside from Verdi, Beethoven or Shostakovitch come to mind--were deeply in the thick of politics, placing it often front and center in their actual work.

The moderators had deleted the posts that the TC management deems "problematic", that's why that "Help me decide" thread looked "normal" when you visited it.
