However, I did get a look at the luxury box set, which is clearly a must have, picked up a brochure and a CD, which gives you the opportunity to compare side by side the new masters against previous ones. The tracks chosen are.

    1. Tristan und Isolde - Liebestod (1949 Cetra recording)
    2. La Gioconda - Ecco il velen di Laura (1952 Cetra recording)
    3. I Paglicacci - Qual fiamma (1954 EMI recording)
    4. Tosca - Vissi d'arte (1953 EMI recording)
    5. Romeo et Juliette - Je vexu vivre (1961 EMI recording).

In each case we hear the beginning of the new remaster, then the beginning of one of the previous masters, and then the whole aria or excerpt in the new re-master.

What is immediately apparent is the greater fullness of the orchestral sound and the greater presence of the voice. The acoustic too now sounds more natural. To be honest, neither my ears nor my equipment are probably up to the task of deciphering any other differences, but I have no doubt I will be getting this set.

Both in presentation and in sonics, Warner have probably done the best job they could. I talked to the representative there who had evident enthusiasm for the project and a genuine love of Callas. This was not some sales and marketing rep who had wandered in from the pop department. He genuinely new his subject and this too inspires confidence in the seriousness with which Warner have approached their task.

    Good news......
Finally 30 years after CD format released to mass market the sound guys are figuring out how to make them sound better?

This will be my 4th CD boxset of Callas operas purchased, hopefully the last
I actually already sold the first one (blue box) used

    Adapt, improvise, overcome. . . 'up-grade.'

Horse-and-buggy to Model T to Ferrari to Maclauren F1 to Bugatti Veyron to Warner-re-engineer-of-Callas.

Honor Thyself, DA. You're worth it. ;D

I wonder how the Amazon sellers price will be.

I'm still working on completing my Klemperer update.

I will keep the nice faux burl wood pattern box (plastic laminate) because each opera has unique photo cover and jewel case, same recordings/1997 remasters as cheap blue box but it uses same generic cheap cardboard sleeve design for each CD........

Plus you have that nice black book with Callas goodies inside

    DA,
It'll be interesting to hear about your comparison of the Warner remasters to the Pristine remasters

A little bad news Callas fans.

I emailed Warner classics and asked them if they had any plans to do a LIVE Callas recordings set.
They said, unfortunately they have no plans to do so, but if that changes they'd let me know.
Seems a no brainer to me.
    Oh well....................

Don't get greedy, we will have our Callas jackpot soon on "C" day......

There is one completely new album in this boxset called "pure" which is a 1 CD hits collection taken from newly remastered material, but I didn't like the track selection at all......to many French and offbeat songs, La Divina is the goddess of Verdi, Bellini, and Donizetti!

^^^True, I'm greedy, greedy, greedy when it comes to greatness.

True DA, but it will be nice to hear her takes on this other material too.

Before we talk about the book that comes with new boxset........

I want to strongly recommend any Callas fan go to Amazon USA and order this hardcover book "callas: images of a legend" used (under $10), large format 272 pages jammed full of incredible b/w fine art photos of the highest quality on every page, this is absolutely essential for any Callas fan......

I have actually framed a couple of my favorites pictures from this book and purchased two copies! The ultimate "coffee table book" for Callas fan

    ;D ;D ;D

    YESSSSSS!!!

-- as far as the pictures go, certainly.

But my ultimate Callas coffee table books-- literally-- are these two; both by Callas scholar John Ardoin:

First, a giant coffee table book with black-and-white pictures cataloging her operatic career with snippets of reminiscences from the people who knew her best: Visconti, Zeffirelli, Simionato, De Stefano, the lot. The beautifully composed narrative written by Ardoin reads like something an intelligent museum curator would put together. Absolutely first-rate in every way. I've spent hours and hours pouring over this wonderful book, lying in front of my stereo, propped up on my elbows-- the most wonderful experience imaginable.

-- And of course, The Callas Legacy. Aside from Talk Classical's own Greg Mitchell, quite simply the Bible of intelligent musical criticism on all of Divina's recordings.
