I want full inspection report from the field when boxset arrives.......

What is in the box, and do CD sleeves have original art or unique photos?

I don't have it yet, but there are reviews up on amazon.de (transalated by google):

"This box now assembled these recordings; and as one would have liked more: A relatively simple box in which the CD's stuck in simple paper sleeves. The booklet is a bit confusing, making the search for individual recordings somewhat difficult. Warner has shown with the Callas Edition, that there is another way.

Too bad, but I find that this presentation of this wonderful singer is not fair."

"Ah, but nobody ever said life was fair, Renata. I'm bigger and I'm faster. I will always beat you."

    - No, but you're right though: Renata deserves nothing less than the full roll out.

That was the reviewer's comment, not mine... To be fair though, this is half the price of the Callas box, and if the sound is good I won't be complaining...

Well, 'yeah' its half the price of the Callas set--- the Callas set is one-hundred times the singing.

The voice that soars twice as high lives half as long.

"Being 'Callas'" was killing Maria; but I doubt "being 'Tebaldi'" would.

Callas has already left the building.

It was over before it started.

No fight was ever necessary. They were in different cages. We are blessed by both.

I think they were on good terms later in Callas career (when not dueling for queen of La Scala status 1950s) and had nothing but admiration for each others talents

There was an incident very early on (1951 Rio?) in South America when both were singing at a gala event and had verbal agreement not to do encore performances, as the story goes after Callas sang Tebaldi followed with encores, this upset Maria for a short time......but subsequent to that there were no hard feelings and the "feud" was a media hyped event.

I have never heard anything but complimentary words from Renata when describing Maria, two of the great ones.....

I couldn't agree more-- I do like to play though. <Mrrrrrrrrrrooooowwwwww.>

Its the fanatical fans that do this sort of unspeakable discourtesy.

I've been on both side of the fence though, believe it or not. I'm still a huge (early) Sutherland fan, but there was a time when I didn't like (what I thought I knew of) Maria Callas-- and I really couldn't oblige any of the reflexive, cult-like panegyric lavished on her by some of her fans.

Then of course I heard some of Callas' early oeuvre, and I was instantly hooked. . . So I started playing Callas' Bellini and Donizetti along side Sutherland's, obsessively. I found that the harder I tried to knock-down Callas, the more I was won over by her; so much in fact that she became my favorite singer of all time.

Anyway, comparing Tebaldi and Callas is, in all frankness, and shorn of my usual hyperbole, completely fatuous and unnecessary. Both are gorgeous in completely disparate ways. Madison Avenue creates all of this binary, hegemonic, "Coke-or-Pepsi,' either-or nonsense.

    Indulge both.

I try to enjoy more of Tebaldi's work but I find her a peculiarly uncommunicative singer for all the beauty of her voice, and I can't think of a single role she recorded that I don't prefer sung by someone else, and not just Callas.

Setting aside Callas, I would prefer Caballe or Price as Aida, Scotto as Adrianna Lecouvreur, Freni or De Los Angeles as Mimi, De Los Angeles, Scotto, Freni or Gheorghiu as Butterfly, Neblett as Minnie.

She was my first Desdemona on the Karajan recording, and I absolutely loved her in the role, but even here I now prefer the more dramatically attuned singing of Scotto; and for sheer beauty of sound Te Kanawa and Fleming take a lot of beating, and both seem to me to convey more of Desdeomona's plight.

It's odd too, because save for Scotto and Freni, all the others I mention are not singing in their mother tongue, and yet I find they are all better at communicating the text.
"It's not enough to have a beautiful voice." Maria Callas
