    Default Verdi: great operas

The boxed set of 35 discs on the EMI label. Any opinions on his set? Looks good for a birthday gift for myself in April. I know it lacks libretto and while eye be nice to have it's the music I really want. I can look up the libretti online easy enough. Verdi us so powerful and dramatic, I'm looking to pick up more of his operas and this'd be a nice way to do it.

It's a nice set, but not many would be my first choices.
A nice collection though. And a nice Birthday gift.

As with all such sets, swings and roundabouts. There are no outright misses, and a few hits, but few that would be first choices.

The hits are Serafin's Rigoletto, Giulini's Don Carlo, Levine's Giovanna d'Arco and Karajan's Falstaff. Muti's Macbeth is pretty good too (though I would still prefer Abbado's DG version).

The rest all have their attractions, but none are top choices, though Santini's Simon Boccanegra is worth hearing for the contributions of Gobbi, Christoff and De Los Angeles (even if it is ultmately eclipsed by Abbado's DG account).
