Default Sibelius, part 1 of 2 (A la carte poll #44)

Part of a continuing series of polls, which simply asks:
Which of these works do you like?

My goal is to build a general picture of the musical interests on TC.

Please vote for *all* of the pieces you like.
Options are available for voters who don't know any of the works, and those who know some but don't like any of them. Even "I don't know any" is an interesting and welcome piece of information.

Thank you to everyone who's voted so far!
You can still vote in all the previous polls. For the full list, see the blog entry linked in my signature below.
More votes are needed in these polls, please:
Variations part 1; 1740-42; and Opus 33 works.

This is the first composer-specific poll I've done. The usual "rules" apply... if you're not familiar with Sibelius's music, or just don't like it, there are poll options for you.

I've listed the works in this and tomorrow's poll in more-or-less chronological order; so today's covers the years 1892-1904.

I chose the pieces essentially on the most-recorded works listed on ArkivMusic.
The Violin concerto, Symphonies nos.3 & 5, and Tapiola have already appeared in polls (respectively: 34, 31, 21, and 4).

I just wish I had had an "all" button. Woulda been less tiring, click click click click click....

But I'm done now, so I'll add that I like the complete versions of things better than the suites and excerpts. That excepts the things that are only suites and nothing else. Talk about confusion.

Anyway, the whole Karelia, not just the suite. And Press Celebrations, all of it, which is the only palatable way--for me--to listen to Finlandia. And Kuolema, too, which is the only way to hear Valse Triste, as well.

One of my favourite composers, and one of the most consistent in terms of quality. All, please.

Hmm, going by the voting so far, I should perhaps clarify that because this is a multiple-choice poll, you can vote for both The Swan of Tuonela and the complete Lemminkäinen Suite. If you vote for the full suite but not the Swan, I guess that implies you don't actually like the Swan as a stand-alone work. This is something the producers of compilation albums would need to be informed of!

Very glad to see the songs mentioned. There´s a terrific recording of these with Hynninen/Segerstam, orchestrated versions.
Just voted for the complete Lemminkainen, not individual movements. The Karelia Suite is a little too simplistic to my taste. Don´t recall the Romance, but I´ve probably nothing against it; there are some fine little-known pieces for strings, including the Presto, Rakastava and Suite Champetre.

EDIT: Ouch, forgot to vote Valse Triste, from Kuolema.

Rakastava will be in the next poll.

I like most of them, but some more, so I voted for them!
I often feel that Sibelius songs are problematic depending on the performer, I once heard a recital with a very famous American soprano and her Swedish was awful and my only lasting memory of her is that she sucked! (Unfortunately her German, was rather poor as well, but she could sing perfectly!) .. On the other hand, many moons ago down the road from my home, I heard a slightly tipsy Matti Salminen at the summer home of Finnish composer Einar Englund (him at the piano) sing Säv. säv susa, that made me burst into tears!

The fourth symphony is still my favourite Sibelius work! (Hint!)

I'd also like to put in a plug for Sibelius's splendid songs. I know them mainly from the recordings of Anne Sofie von Otter and Bengt Forsberg on BIS.

All of it. Everything. I love Sibelius when he's great and when he's not. Who is the one person who dislikes it all? Off with his head!

There's a remarkable recital of Sibelius songs with the great Finnish baritone Jorma Hynninen:

Buy this CD! Hynninen has a glorious voice, and he and his accompanist, Ralf Gothoni, know how to make this fascinating music live.

All I voted plus Symphony 3,5 and 6, Piano Quintet in Gm, Piano Trio in DM, The Wood Nymph, String Quartets in Dm and Am, King Christian II Suite, Violin Concerto, His Piano Sonatas and Sonatinas, Vapautettu Kuningatar and Malinconia.

Sibelius is love, Sibelius is life!

Weird, because it looks like Haydn man also voted for 4 of the works on the list.
