Default Beethoven: Genius or just another dead composer?

In light of several polls posted here lately, I am forced to post my own. How about that Beethoven fella? Is he worth the praise his flacks and media people churn out? What say ye?

Of course he's worth the praise. He had a lifetime of training and wrote a lot of exquisite music. Genius? We will never know.

If you heard the Prom concerts with Andsnes playing Beethoven and don't agree the old guy was a staggering musical genius then you must have a tin ear!

We should have more threads/polls about the very top tier composers. Beethoven is one, the very best of the greatest.

Oh, I think we know now. Why? Well, for one thing, there's a pretty good consensus that Mozart was a genius. If Mozart was, then Beethoven sure as hell was. And that's only a start.

Maybe Glenn Gould had it right? "Beethoven's reputation is based entirely on gossip."

His influence and expansion of expressive possibilities of music are indisputable. His melodic gifts on the other hand....

George Szell said of Gould, "That nut is a genius".

I don't like 100% of his stuff, but there is a lot of brilliance in his music.
2nd mvt of 7th Symphony, 1st and 3rd mvt of Moonlight Sonata, 5th Symphony, 9th Symphony and many many other compositions. He is for sure one of my most favorite. His music is sometimes dark and almost always full of passion. What is not to like!?
But he certanly is dead just like many other composers. That is something that makes him quite ordinary just like all other dead composers, but I will forgive him that little error in career.
