Default Do You Like Helping Other Listeners?

A very simple question that might make you think a little more from your own perspective: "Do you like to help other listeners"? Helping comes in many different ways or maybe just a few. It means different things to different listeners in classical music.

Best with an example or two, with me leading the way.

I was helping a friend decide which best pieces to start exploring the ever large opera repertoire the other day. She wanted to know beyond the "popular arias" and she has never listened to an opera in full. So in this example, I helped her by narrowing down her preference by composers and by period and by style. A great way to start in my opinion, and she started off with the ever popular Bizet's Carmen. We had a lengthy discussion too about why opera plots are stylized - it is not a modern movie etc.

    What about you?

'Yes - I love helping whenever I can.'
    Unfortunately, I can't, very often.

But I do love helping for the same reason that I went in for teaching: I am enthusiastic and upfront, and I long to share the things that I find beautiful. Communion is better than division.

I love helping other listeners, especially by making them aware how bad is the music they liked so far and showing them that in reality, the music I like is better and the best and they should like it too instead of their crap, I find myself particularly helpful to confused listeners of modern music who need to be made concious that there is some REAL music (with melody, harmony, expression and soul etc.) and they don't have to listen to the atonal noise.

Sounds a bit like my struggles with pupils who don't like their set book!

It's natural to help others by sharing what we like. But I do also suggest to have an open ear to listen to other types of classical music for broad awareness of genres. It is educational.

Yes I like to help others like that too! Sometimes they don't even know they are confused, or realise that what they are listening to is noise do they?!
However, I have found that my help isn't always well received. My superior taste in good, genuinely great music may perhaps be almost too rich in its genius for such a deluded mind to comprehend or appreciate. In such cases the recipient of my advice acts as if I am being patronising and arrogant. I've lost count of the number of times I've been called a reactionary!! Their loss, I say!

None of the options exactly fits me. I like to share what I enjoy and really love it when the like minded discover something they can enjoy too, but if helping means forcing my tastes on others, count me out. It's better when it is a genuine coincidental discovery.

I clicked 'love to', but my motivation isn't love, just a simple wish to share the wisdom of the aged - with some folks who really, really need help.
I spent a fortune on deodorant before I realized that people don't like me anyway.

I try to make things harder for other listeners by confusing them and providing misinformation. My motivation is entirely altruistic though; it was for me too easy to get into classical and in retrospect I would have preferred some challenge, so I try to ensure the same doesn't happen to others.

I love knowing about things and sharing, yes, but beyond that I like to assist in finding the music that 'fits' for a person. I also like them to try on the things that don't immediately fit, to help gradually promote an awareness of their own flexibility as a listener.

I will help others with their understanding of the music that I am familiar with. Obviously if I don't know the piece there is not much I can say about it. There are a few pieces that I have a reasonable understanding of and can correct the misunderstanding of others about those pieces, as long as the other person is willing to listen. As soon as an argument starts, I leave the conversation.

You are doing sterling work. Your posts are a masterclass in obfuscation.

I like to help, but try to be careful that I'm not simply trying to mold someone into who I want them to be (which is so often what it's all about).
