Default Do You Like This Arrangement Of The GoldBerg Variations? Please Listen.

Listen and let your ears decide this work of genius arranged for string trio. I like the harpsichord version and I also like this version.

I would like to read your thoughts.

I'm addicted to the Goldberg variations and have listened to this and like it! I've also heard it with Fretwork, viol ensemble, harp & guitar. Tempos vary with the instrument, maybe cembalo players go fastest and guitarists slowest. I usually like them all

It shows how versatile the score can be that it strikes me quite nicely, though I suspect I might prefer the harpsichord version just slightly. Bach is a proven genius with this piece!

Bach's music seems especially successful when transcribed for other instruments.

I like this arrangement, and Sitkovetsky's version for string orchestra. The Britten Sinfonia's recording on Harmonia Mundi was one of my favourite albums of 2015.

I prefer keyboard versions slightly above the arrangement version

I strongly favor keyboard over strings, especially modern strings.

I prefer the keyboard version, but I like that as well.

It was interesting to read the score and see how the above arrangement was interpreted. It's a nice way of performing it.

I do think I may still prefer keyboard (harpsichord) versions but it's fascinating to see this type of arrangement.

That's great, but to be honest I always have to listen to the variations on a harpsichord, with the 14 canons played right after. I love what has been done with other ensembles, but I don't feel like I've really soaked the whole thing in unless I've heard it the aforementioned way.

    None of the above.

I would vote it is OK.

No I don't like it. I detest it. If Bach intended the Goldberg Variations for string trio, he would have made the arrangement.

However, you can listen to it as long as I'm not in the same room at the time. How's that for a nice arrangement?

The great thing to me about a good transcription or arrangement, like the one above, is that is allows me to hear things in the music I previously didn't notice. Like looking at something from a completely different angle and seeing something you never noticed before. Thanks for posting this.

I like the arrangement very much but for me nothing beats the Goldberg Variations played on the piano (by Hewitt or Perahia or Janssen in particular).

The Goldberg Variations was written for the intimacy and virtuosity of the solo keyboard and the harpsichord in particular and that is how it sounds best.

Arranging such a work for string trio is in my opinion, musical graffiti.

Bad enough pianists have gotten hold of it.
