    Default Contemporary Composers Poll #12

For reference, I think we're almost halfway through my list. I was thinking ~25-30 polls. I don't have the steam for a Nereffid size project, clearly.

Please Vote For Every Composer Whose Music You Have Heard.

Fans of less obscure things might be delighted to hear Giacomo Manzoni, one of the last remaining survivors of the central group of the '50s Darmstadt School, played by none other than Maurizio Pollini.

Aside from Silver Apples of the Moon, Subotnick had several big-label releases (Columbia I think):
    - The Wild Bull
    - Sidewinder
    - Touch

He had a lot of other works, some with interesting titles, that can be found here and there, such as:
    - A Sky of Cloudless Sulfur
    - All My Hummingbirds have Alabis
    - Double Life of Amphibians
    - Passages of the Beast

Just reading these titles makes you want to hear the works!

Voted Sallinen, Rzewski, Subotnick, Widman, Lachenmann.

Not sure about Manzoni, but know the name.

EDIT: Turns out that I have the Varese piece as a download.

Jimmy Lopez is an up and coming Peruvian composer - it's colourful and accessible:

Enno Poppe is euro avant garde - I think he's awesome. Microtonal keyboard goodness

Lachenmann is the big name on this list - he likes to use instruments to make sounds. My favourite is this one, and it's fairly characteristic - others will have their own favourites:

Careful there! Easy to think of Verdi's Manzoni Requiem.

Rzewski, Manzoni, Lachenmann and Subotnick for me.
Giacomo Manzoni (not to be confused with Alessandro Manzoni the novelist, whom Verdi dedicated his Requiem to) is also well known for his essays and translations. He is the author of a popular Guide to Symphonic Music (in Italian) and the Italian "official" translator of all Schoenberg writings.
In 1989 I attended the première of his opera Doktor Faustus (based on Mann's novel) at La Scala, a Robert Wilson's production with Gary Bertini conducting.
His music deserves to be better known indeed, although quite limited in number of works.

Rzewski and Lachenmann from today's poll.

I have at least heard of Sallinen, Subotnick and Widman, so there are 5 familiar names.

There's an article about Subtonick (with video) published yesterday on the BBC.
