Default Mahler (?!) LP with animals

Hi! I'm trying to work out what a piece is. I have the feeling that it's Mahler (maybe one of the symphonies?) or Mendelssohn, but can't be sure. The LP was published no later than 1988; my father played it for me when I was small. It has a vaguely German / Central European cover - a cottage lit up from inside, in a wood by night, and anthropomorphic animals. Does this ring any bells?

    Thanks!

That cover is from a painting by a famous Artist, whose name currently escapes me. Any one know?

Yes, and I'm not a big Marilyn Horne fan, but she surprised me in this one, very pleasantly.
