    Default Best Meistersinger DVDs

I have this one and it is excellent, but am looking to get more Meistersingers on DVD.

I do have one other Meistersinger on DVD (this one), but just started watching it so it is too soon to know if it is one of the best.

The problem with this version (which I have) lies in the fact the Walther (Ben Heppner) looks as if he has wandered in from Falstaff and looks older than Hans Sach his future father-in-law Pogner. The cruelties of HD also show that Matilla is past the first flush of youth. Having said that it is well sung and well staged.

From what I've seen, this is really good. Perhaps not the best sung but well acted and the characters look the part.

A fantastic production. I enjoyed seeing it live when it came to Chicago 2 or 3 years ago.

Did you decide on one yet?

One time I agree with you: as regards acting, this one is the best.

Not yet, but the choice appears to be very clear for Jurowski. The problem is that most offerings are Blue Ray and I guess I can't use that with my primitive (2006 computer and DVD drive). However, I never play these disks from the drive, but rip to an image file (.iso) and play that, so maybe I can rip to the image file from a Blue Ray? That could save a at least $5 on a purchase.

One question, the guy who plays the knight, is he wearing a hearing aid in the production. Observe here (his right ear):

He's trying to make Ulrich Eisslinger, the elderly Meistersinger with the ear trumpet, feel more comfortable.

My real answer is that that is just Marco Jentzsch's ear. There's another close-up earlier in the same video, around 15-23 seconds (and it then helpfully switches to Sachs' ear) that shows a longer, clearer view. There's nothing in his ear.
