May I again recommend to those deeply offended by these clearly musical discussions of contemporary opera, that they click on the little bar that says "community", and then on "Groups". There you will find puppy dogs and pit bulls ready to romp and play about politics, religion, and (Oliver) Sacks.
Yes, forcing people to fund art is the right way to go. Who else but the government could possibly help art along? I mean, whatever would we do without our overlords making sure we include diverse peoples and diverse perspectives in our art. All culture is equally good... duh! Here, "Afro-Jazz Improvisational Studies," have a grant for 15,000 dollars. Tax dollars well spent, I'll say!
Public money is traditionally spent on activities that benefit the people in a broad sense -- defense, schools, roads, and so forth. On that theory, tax dollars might be better spent subsiding forms of music that are more widely enjoyed. Rap comes to mind.
