Actually, I've always found religious music to be a source of comfort during tumultuous periods in my life. My favorite religious works (Handel's Messiah, Bach's Mass in B Minor, Haydn's Creation, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis) remind me that the universe is much bigger than whatever problems I'm having at the time. Thinking about the vastness of the cosmos, and the mysteries of creation, always helps me to put my own troubles in perspective.

I'm sorry that religious music hasn't been helping you with the types of negative feelings that you're experiencing. I see what you mean about the joyful amen sections making you feel worse. Perhaps you might find comfort (or at least an emotional outlet) in a more sorrowful form of sacred music, such as the Crucifixus from Bach's B-minor mass.

I love music for music’s sake I do not care whether it is religious or not, nor do I care about the composers life style it is the music that is important as far as I am concerned.

I find music of all kinds a comfort during times of stress. Particularly I like Early Music and Renaissance dances. But also religious music - I was listening to a YouTube selection of music celebrating the marriage of Henry IV of France and Marie de Medici. First came the glorious secular dances and songs - and then suddenly we were into the Mass and though it was seventeenth century music, there was a wonderful tenor and what he was singing sounded very like plain chant.

I had an almost instantaneous reaction - not just feeling comforted, but also physically I felt calmer. I remembered listening to some actual plainchant from Solesmes and feeling the same thing. There is something about this music that has a mystical effect on my brain and reminds me that we are all one and that love lasts throught time. True, I am a Catholic, but I can find the same sort of calming effect in Hindu chants too.

Best wishes to the OP that your depression will lift and you'll feel comforted - by whatever kind of music.

Is it hard for you to listen to religious music when you're in turmoil??

This reminds me of a time when my church had to face a high-pressure, gut-wrenching, only-God-can-get-us-out-of-this situation, and all we could do for seven days was wait. The only thing that kept me from rolling up into a fetal position was listening to the B-52s. That music was so goofy and ridiculous, it snapped me out of it. I can handle most situations, but my wife knows that when I pull out Rock Lobster, something really bad is going on.

Any classical music makes me feel better. Sad music lets me empty out the negativity in my heart, happy music makes me think of the better moments in life, religious music changes my perspective on life, intense music stimulates me out of apathy... I could go on longer but the list would extend quite far.

Bottom line is, emotion is always exchanged between the listener and the music that he or she is listening to. Trading a bit of your sorrows for whatever the music has to offer you goes a long way.
