Default Would a TalkClassical chat SERVER* be out of the question? (xmpp maybe?)

Hello. ^^ I have a few questions for not only the forum administrators, but the rest of the talk classical forum as well.

First and foremost, I was wanting to ask the forum Admins if hosting an xmpp/jabber chat server would be out of the question or not. I personally think that it would be a good feature to add to the forum. Which brings me to my question for the rest of the forum members..

As a forum member, would you find a dedicated chat server fun/useful? Please answer the poll.

Here's some information on the XMPP/Jabber protocol and what it's for.
    http://xmpp.org/
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensi...sence_Protocol

Here is a very good chat application that supports the xmpp/jabber protocol, as well as most popular chat protocols. (aim,yahoo!,etc..)
    http://www.pidgin.im/

Also, if anybody has any questions about XMPP/Jabber, feel free to ask..

Even though my time is at a premium now for posts and other hobby sites, I would ADORE a chat server.

i think it would be a good idea, but it'd probably loose steam after the first few weeks, or even days -- one way to counter this would be weekly "theme" chats...oh i think this would be great for the poms this summer

Ah, that would be a great idea. ^^ The good thing about XMPP/Jabber is that forum members can make chat rooms and instant message each other. (So if there is more than one even going on at once, they wont conflict with each other.)

One problem might be bandwidth ... the current server (somewhere in Denmark) is host to two very large music forums, both owned by Frederik Magle. However, its not my decision ... it would be totally up to Frederik if this were implemented.

We currently have PM's and Visitor Messaging and the capability to set up Social Groups.

I'm more comfortable with this traditional forum format because it gives us time to make more thoughtful posts. We don't always take advantage of that aspect however.

As for the moment, the possibility is going to have to be put on hold. I've spoken to a few administrators, and they all think that they are all to busy to consider a chat server right now. :-/

As much as I'd like a chat server, it can only happen if there are people with the ability to maintain ANOTHER project. I've hosted a few forums myself, and if you go too elaborate, managing becomes almost another job..

Still, I think it will be useful to gather feedback from everybody, so continue to share your views on the matter.

Oh, and, I thought about that Weston. I eventually came to the conclusion that it can go either way. For instance, a large percentage of the threads I've created were brought on by conversations I've had with the members here, and I think the same is true with everybody. For that reason, I'm not sure which direction things will take. On the other hand, things could happen the same way you described...

Quite honestly I find them intrusive, I have tried them and they do have their uses [one good feature is that it sorts out those with a genuine knowledge against those with only a Google knowledge] but mine are switched off, for now

You know, I'm quite glad I made a poll for the topic. It seems that the longer the subject is presented, the more it becomes a 50-50 situation. The first few days suggested that most would like a server, where as the only voting activity now seems to be quite the opposite.

Hmm... could you elaborate on the intrusive aspect? (For my sake.) I'm not sure how a chat server could be intrusive, due to the fact that the chat feature isn't an embedded forum thing, users of the service can freely turn on/off the service, and also pick and choose who they talk to.

I assume you are meaning the sort chat that is/was provided by skype also gmail, yahoo etc where you get the messages pop up on your screen, flashing for immediate attention, you offend if you don't answer there and then, this is what I mean by intrusive. now if I am on the wrong track please enlighten

Yes, I am referring to that sort of service, though I'm mainly talking about the chat rooms the service offers. MOST Instant Messaging/Chat Room programs allow you to block all incoming messages, meaning that you only get messaged when you want to; thus, all the annoying messages popping up vanish and you are free to only join chat room when you want to. (There will be a list of discussions going on that you can join.)

The fun thing about chatting in real time is that you get to talk to people that know what they're talking about. (As Weston pointed out.) And it leaves room for both high-paced serious discussions and calmer, not so important conversations such as just getting to know each other better. (For instance, other than the fact that you are an avid music lover, I know nothing about you, and it will probably stay that way at this rate.)

I must have missed that, but I also made this point i.e real knowledge as opposed to Google knowledge

Maybe! Skype had this sort of thing but it was voice conferencing and was very good as any number of people could join in at the same time, all you needed was a microphone, the snag was you did not know who was talking, This could still be set up (through skype or similar) for members of TC but operated independently of the forum, Do you envisage that the method you suggest could work smoothly between a group of say 6?? bearing in mind the different time zones we live in also what is to stop you using the existing chat facilities of say google, yahoo etc, just a thought

For me, there are some things chat rooms are good for... and this just doesn't seem to be one of them. You know, as has already been pointed out, there are PMs and wall messages. I dunno, chatting seems to me more for getting to know people, as we already are doing utilizing what we have. So it becomes sort of superfluous, you know?

Of course, it's only my opinion. Trash it if you want.
