    Default Bass traps

I'm interested in making my room sound better, so I'm curious about bass traps.

Can they look good in a domestic environment? Any makes/materials better than others?

Anyway just a thread to post your thoughts on acoustic panels really.

Here is a good video that covers the basics (and has some funny theme music)

Thanks, one problem is that they look bad! I feel for that guy's family living with all those panels.

I think I need someone to come in and study the acoustics of my room and make informed recommendations - if anyone knows anyone in London who provides that service please let me know.

And I need someone who'll provide the traps on an approval basis, so that I can hear the effects and judge the ROI for myself. It's a big investment, you wouldn't buy an amp or speakers at the same price without first auditioning.

Look for a home theater installer. There are lots of them around now.

Are the only problems you are having in the bass region?

If your speakers are too close to the wall behind the speakers, or you are getting early reflections from the side walls, these need to be addressed, too. Maybe even before bass traps, since these types of problems tend to effect a wider range of frequencies in more important regions.

If you are getting reflections later than 50 milliseconds, you are losing critical details, and messing up your image and soundstage.

Just a note to say that I went ahead and I now have four bass traps, not all necessarily in the ideal place from a sound point of view, but nevertheless the improvement is astonishing. The products I bought, from GIK, are covered in a beige cloth which matches the walls, so aesthetically they really aren’t a problem, surprisingly.

I have electrostatics, they’re about 3’ from the wall, and the speakers radiate sound from the back as well as the front. So reflections from the rear were an issue that I really am glad it dealt with.

Sorry the image is the wrong way round.
