    Question Wagner on DVD.......

Since we did the cd recommendations, I thought I'd do the same for the DVD's.

So we'll start with The Flying Dutchman.

what is your DVD recommendation for Wagner's first masterpiece?

When all else fails, listen to Thick as a Brick.

"Life's a long song, but the tune ends too soon for us all." Ian Anderson lyric

"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Hamlet

Excellent thread idea! This is the absolutely finest Hollander video I have ever watched. Every singer on this is great in voice and acting. I first watched this with my son. Neither of us had seen a Hollander before. We were both blown away by it. I tried another Hollander DVD (with Behrens) and it was so bad I got rid of it. The other DVD productions just did not look worthwhile to me. Here is the whole Sawallisch Hollander on YouTube for those who want to check it out.

If this is a voting thread then Sawallisch is my vote. However I would like to mention another Hollander that is obscure but VERY well worth watching. It actually became a cult horror film. Here it is along with this linked write-up about it. Further discussion in this page.

Pugg, The video you list I rejected largely on the basis of the ending where Senta dives onto the stage at the end (You Tube Clip). Guess I wanted her to dive into water, but not easily done on a stage production, so maybe I will give it a try.

I see a new Hollander video was just released last November.

I have 3 Holländer DVD's. Fritz's recommendation, Pugg's, & a version from Bayreuth with Samuel Youn as the Dutchman conducted by Thielemann. I prefer the Thielemann even though its not a traditional staging by any means. The Sawallisch "movie version" doesn't appeal to me because it doesn't feel like opera imo. But if someone is being introduced to the story I think its a great version.
