    Question Wagner on DVD.....Tannhauser

    Opera number 2.

What's your recommendation for Tannhauser on DVD?

Itullian, thank you for starting these threads. Looking forward to seeing the responses as I have very little Wagner on DVD.

I have one with Rene Kollo in the title role from the Bayerische Staatsoper & another from the Met with Botha. Tannhäuser isn't an opera I know as well as some of the others, but of the 2 I prefer the Met because Kollo is very hard for me to listen to. Botha, on the other hand, had a lovely voice even though his acting always left something to be desired.

Edit: after I wrote this I realized that the Met Tannhäuser wasn't a DVD release, but was rather from their on-demand archives.

Gwen Jones sings both female roles, old school 4:3 picture but can't think of a better new one.....

It was my first Tannhauser and it is very good. Very traditional staging.

I am about 23 minutes into this one and while I am expecting it will be very good, based on the Venusburg scene I am going to call this "The Gumby Tannhauser."

Beautiful! Rich autumnal colours in the outdoor scenes, and the Wartburg set suggests what 19th century productions looked like.

Don't much care for Cassilly's voice. My go-to Tannhäuser is the admittedly dark, bleak Götz Friedrich Bayreuth production.
