    Default Hey from Canada

Hey all! Just thought I would say hello to everyone. Im new to listening to classical music. I mostly use the Spotify radio for now until I get an ear for what I like. So far its all been terrific. One question though..Ive never listened or seen an Opera but it has peaked my interest. Just curiois if anyone can point me an a direction.
    Cheers

Welcome Gingerbeardman. I hope you enjoy this site as much as I have/do. Any favorite composers/performers/genres?

As to your opera question, I can't answer you. But there are many, and I do mean many, on this site who can direct or give you guidance. If they don't find your first post here, post your question in the opera thread. I'm sure you'll get more suggestions than you can follow up on. Good luck!

Hello Roger/ Gingerbeardman, welcome to Talk Classical, I also hope yOu have great time.
About the oprea question, don't you have the live transmission ( in cinemas) from New Your in your neck of the wood ? It's a great way to see good performances .
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.

Hi there. Welcome to TC. Think you will love it on here.

You say you listen to "Spotify" . There would be some opera pieces on there for you to try or U Tube to watch.

Well, looking forward to reading your posts

Welcome to TC, Gingerbeardman. Opera? Fantastic. Here in Talk Classical we have different ways of enjoying it. There are some who:
    • enjoy opera by musical eras
    • enjoy attending live performances
    • stream or watch DVDs of opera films with subtitles
    • collect historical and stereo recordings of a particular composer, especially Wagner
    • discuss the technical qualities of the trillion different remasters of a Maria Callas performance in London
    • enjoy collecting rarely performed operas

And then there's me. I watch an opera performance on DVD with subtitles or libretto, I listen and compare to 20 different recordings of the same work, decide which I like the best and write it down on my wishlist so one day I can purchase it on CD.

This is an incredible world with a wonderful community. Where do you see yourself in two years if you decide to follow this path? Would you open a new personality category for opera instead of the bulletpoints above?

    Welcome and enjoy your stay.

Well, I posted a "Hello" thread here, but it must have gotten stuck in "Post Approval" or something. Could a moderator check this for me, please?

    Thanks

Never mind, everyone. I found it.

Tried to delete the above post, but couldn't find where and how to accomplish this. Please excuse my ignorance.

Hi Bill. We cannot delete our posts. We can edit them in the first 12 hours. Also, you need to make more than 10 posts in the Classical Music discussion section to access to all the features. It can be as simple as posting a cover of a recording you are listening to in Current Listening.

I hope it's useful to you. There are some angry birds on reddit complaining about our unfriendliness and snobbish personality because they just couldn't follow these "simple" steps. Don't listen to them.
