Default Music is my life force

    Hello!

Just wanted to offer up a quick introduction: my name is Jeff, a classical music lover in Los Angeles, USA, by way of Berkeley, Seattle, New York City, and Atlanta. I grew up in Atlanta, where I studied the violin throughout childhood and regularly attended Atlanta Symphony Orchestra concerts. Although I no longer perform, music continues to be my life force, and these days you find me often at LA Phil, LA Opera, Pacific Symphony, and other music organizations around Southern California.

Favorite composers include Mahler, Sibelius, Bruckner, R. Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Mendelssohn... Though, honestly, I tend to love anything symphonic in nature. That's not to dismiss chamber music, however, and I adore string quartets almost as much as symphonies. I also enjoy opera, which tends to be my wife's preference and so is something we share often, especially Puccini, Verdi, and Strauss.

I look forward to joining the conversation here. Cheers!

    Jeff

How's the LA Phil these days? I understand the nation's highest paid conductor resides there. Is she making a difference?

The LA Phil is phenomenal, however I think your info may be off: according to this detailed report published June 13, 2018, using 2015/2016 data, the highest paid principal conductor in the US was Jaap van Zweden at the Dallas Symphony with compensation of $3,642,804.

By comparison, LA Phil's principal conductor Gustavo Dudamel ranked 4th with compensation of $1,983,314.

Those are some crazy numbers (at least compared to my salary!) but to your question: the LA Phil is doing amazing things and sounds terrific on a regular basis. I'm very happy being an LA Phil subscriber and supporting in my small way.
