    Default Pre Amps

My pre amp in my 2 channel system stopped working. I think it’s probably a fuse-it flickered a few times before it gave up the ghost-but the thing is built like a tank and can only be opened with great difficulty. Having once committed irreparable damage by trying to diy a much less expensive amp a few decades ago, I am not going to try to fix this. I know a good reliable repair shop, but I won’t be able to get there for a few days, and from past experience I know they aren’t very fast, so I think I am looking to go a few months without the amp.
I have 2 DACs and one of them, the Mytek Manhatten, markets themselves as a PreAmp DAC. I had never used it that way until now.. At first I was playing some unfamiliar recordings-I just bought a set of recordings by the Quartetto Italiano—so I couldn’t judge the performance of the new DAC, but then I played some high resolution downloads (Nelson’s, Boston Symphony, Shostakovich Symphonies) and was duly impressed.
So my question is: How many of you that have separates in your system still use a line stage pre amp?

I still do - a W4S STPse w/ stage 2 modification. It offers both passive and active preamplification. I do vinyl (NAIM Superline phono stage) so I need the preamp function.

I have always used preamp / amp combinations. I tried an integrated for 3 years (LFD), but felt it did not afford me the flexibility I like.

I've never owned a DAC Preamp, but if you like the sound, stick with that. I have read some awesome reviews on the Mytek Manhattan and the lack of complexity seems appealing.

It might be a burned out transformer. That isn't easily fixed yourself. I had that with an amp once. It shut off by itself and never came on again. Would have cost too much to fix.

Preamps are very handy if you have a lot of complex inputs or if you use an equalizer. Digital and HDMI have rendered them pretty much irrelevant, because AVRs offer more flexibility than preamps do now.

Well, I'm hoping for the sake of my wallet that your diagnosis is incorrect...

I will listen to a lot more recordings before I decide. I actually use a second DAC in this system, the Bryston DAC 3, because I own a lot of SACDs and the Bryston will accept the DSD feed from SACDs (via an Oppo 105 transport). I was contemplating selling offthe Mytek but the ability to use it as a back up preamp is a real bonus here.

Just curious - What is the preamp that is in need of repair? Is it ss or tube?
