    The distinguished conductor Michel Corboz, a major figure in vocal music, has died.

    At the age of 27 he founded the Ensemble vocal de Lausanne, followed by the Ensemble instrumental de Lausanne. A friendship with the artistic director of the Erato label led to copious recordings and an international reputation.

    For five days between September 20 and 25, as part of Estate Fiorentina, several major Florentine cultural organisations will celebrate the 90th birthday of Sylvano Bussotti, one of the city’s most multitalented native sons, a composer and performer, artist, writer, actor, director, set and costume designer.

    Born in Florence on October 1, 1931, Bussotti began studying music at an early age, beginning with the violin. Later, at the Luigi Cherubini Conservatory, he studied piano, harmony and counterpoint, but he failed to receive a diploma because World War II interrupted his studies. The relationship with his uncle, Tono Zancanaro, and brother, Renzo, both painters, would be decisive in the development of the artist he would become, as would his later meeting with the poet Aldo Braibanti...

    András Ligeti (5 August 1953 – 19 September 2021) was a Hungarian classical violinist and conductor who worked internationally. He was chief conductor of the Hungarian State Opera House until 1985, and chief conductor to the Budapest Symphony Orchestra from 1989 to 1993. He recorded with a focus on Hungarian music and contemporary music.

    Slovak coloratura soprano. She enjoyed huge success internationally in roles such as Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos and Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute. In her later career, she explored heavier roles in the Italian bel canto repertoire, such as the title role in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, Elvira in Bellini's I puritani, and Elisabetta in Roberto Devereux.

    German composer, musicologist, opera director, and conductor. He worked as a professor of composition, founded a centre for contemporary music in Dresden, and was director of the Leipzig Opera and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He directed a contemporary music series for the Bayerischer Rundfunk and a European centre of the arts in Hellerau. His operas, especially Weiße Rose, on a topic he set to music twice, have been performed internationally, and recorded.

    Dorit Hanak was born on November 15, 1938 in Baden near Vienna. She studied at the Academy for Music in Vienna and made her debut after winning the Concours International de Chant

    Brazilian musicians have been rocked by the death in Rio de Janeiro of Leonardo David, principal conductor of the Camerata Orchestra of Sesi. He was 43 and apparently suffered a heart attack.

    David, formerly an orchestral violinist, was also a professor at the Faculdade de Música do Espírito Santo. He leaves a grieving wife and young children.

    We have been notified by mutual friends of the death of Joan Carlyle, one of the early home-grown singers of the Royal Opera House.

    Joan, who had retired to Wales, was 90.

    Nurtured by Rafael Kubelik and Rudolf Kempe, she sang opposite Maria Callas in Cherubini’s Medea, opposite Jon Vickers in Verdi’s Otello and in the title role of Richard Strauss’s Arabella, among many other versatile performance. She sang Jenifer in the first recording of Tippett’s opera, The Midsummer Marriage.

    RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra has announced the death of John Kinsella, a regular soloist and composer for many years and, for a while, RTÉ Head of Music. John was 89.

    His 11th symphony was premiered by the orchestra in November 2019.
