Rogerx, are you sure that's Franz Mazura? It looks an awful lot like Michael Volle in a recent Meistersinger production.

Default Sir John Peter Jonas CBE FRCM FRSA (14 October 1946 – 22 April 2020)

The former head of English National Opera and Bavarian State Opera died last night in Munich at the age of 73.

Peter had his first bout with cancer at 25 and struggled with it throughout his life. It gave him a sense of proportion and gratitude that endeared him to everyone. Few opera chiefs have spent more time encouraging young singers and helping them along their way.

Very sad news. The picture is however of Jan Talich Jnr, current 1st Violin with the quartet, not of Jan Snr, founder of the quartet, who passed away.

I should also point out that his role as first violinist was indeed only for a few years, being replaced by the superb Petr Messiereur. However, he was the Quartet's Violist for a good 30 years thereafter, until about 2000?

Thank you for your comment, I will ask the mods if they remove the picture.

(The mods have replaced the picture with the correct one.)

Default The Croatian conductor Baldo Podic has died of coronavirus, aged 78

The Croatian conductor Baldo Podic, resident at Basle City Theatre from 1983 to his retirement in 2007, has died of the effects of Covid-19 on an illness for which he was already being treated.

Unflashy and accomplished, he was one of those conductors whom singers trusted most with the audience barely aware of his influence.
