    Does anyone know why Beethoven was Catholic and not Lutheran?

    He was born into a Catholic family. That was quite sufficient in those days.

    And he was baptized Catholic.
    So was Haydn and Mozart.
    Not everyone in Germany is Lutheran

    Yes despite Van Beethoven being a Dutch name (it’s not the German Von signifying nobility), Beethoven’s family was Catholic, his grandfather being affiliated with a cathedral near Antwerp

    The paternal side of his ancestry originated in what is now Belgium which was (and, at least nominally, still is) predominantly Catholic.

    He was a non-practising Catholic but definitely a believer in God
