    Default Bohm Ring

    If I were to listen to just one opera from the Bohm cycle, which should it be?

    I'd pick Walkure or Gotterdammerung. The most exceptional thing about Bohm's Ring, and the reason I think it's so recommendable for new Wagner listeners is the mastery Bohm shows over flow and transitions, which Wagner considered the deepest and most subtle of his arts. Bohm's Ring sounds like one large organic whole, not a stitched together patchwork of moments. For me, this is most noticeable a failing in many other Rings in Walkure and Gotterdammerung.

    The problem with the Bohm Ring is that the recording tends to smooth out the dynamics so that the effect is rather monochromatic. The result of not-so-good microphone placings at Bayreuth.

    Do you mean smooth out the dynamic range? If so, that is perfect for listening on earbuds.

    the funny thing about the Bohm Ring is that people still deploy the same arguments against it that used to be used when the only Rings under consideration were the Solti, the Karajan and the Bohm. True, the sound isn't as good as the Solti or the Karajan, the hooded pit of Bayreuth dampens the dynamic range and generally puts a veil between the listener and the orchestra, and the playing of the Bayreuth forces is a step behind the BPO and VPO.

    But in an era when most fanatics spend much of their time listening to mono Bayreuth recordings from the 50s, it's pretty silly to still be deploying these circa 1970s arguments against the Bohm Ring.

    In my opinion, the best GDR I've ever listened to, not even the Historical recordings of the 50s. Böhm's conducting is my favourite of the entire Ring and the cast can hardly be improved, especially in the "minor roles".

    I'd go for the Götterdämmerung. All the principals are in fine voice, and it has the advantage of not featuring Theo Adam's somewhat dry-voiced Wotan. I'm a huge admirer of Theo Adam, but his tone isn't as attractive as the greatest exponents of the role.

    But some of us aren't fanatics who spend time listening to mono Bayreuth recordings from the 50s.

    Das Rheingold would be my pick. I think what we have on CD gets increasingly worse as the cycle goes on.
