Default Hello from Nova Scotia, Canada

Just joined. I look forward to reading some interesting posts and ideas. I'm a retired Band Director (mostly in Thompson, Manitoba, Canada, which is 500 miles North of Winnipeg). Been playing clarinet professionally since 1973, Principal Clarinet with the Westchester Band in NY (on Facebook) since 1998, where we play a concert series each summer in Scarsdale, NY (50th season was 2018).
My book was published in 2018 "The Most Advanced Clarinet Book" if anyone's interested. Book website is tomheimer.ampbk.com/ and PDF samples are at austinmacauley.com/author/heimer-tom (click on the book image then on PDF).

Enjoy the site. It's mostly harmless.
I treat my music like I treat my pets. It’s something to own, care about and curate with attention to detail. From a blog by hjr.

Oh my, I am mostly Scottish and I hate those things.... When I was searching for a publisher for my method book circa 2006, one Canadian publisher seemed a little interested in a clarinet book-- that is, a book written in N.S. that's not about bagpipes or fiddles.....

None taken. Bagpipes IMHO sound like 5 oboes together and out of tune. In warmups at our band I like to mimic the oboe sound on my clarinet and play some of their solos. I've become quite good at sounding pretty crappy.

    Hello
I always thought clarinet must be such a difficult instrument - I tried blowing into one once and nothing happened. And don't you have to transpose as you go along or something? Sounds difficult.

Yes, very sad. Then yesterday someone from NS died when a "Snowbirds" plane crashed (our version of the U.S.' Blue Angels) in British Columbia. The team was doing a cross Canada tour in support of the efforts against the Virus. As well, 2 of the 6 Canadian Forces people that died in that helicopter crash off Greece were also from NS.
The shootings shocked many in the area. Being a native New Yorker I was perhaps less shocked.
Actually, most of the shootings occurred on the exact route I always take when driving my trailer to NYC to play my summer concert series with the Westchester Band.....which obviously will not happen this year.

The shooter apparently was some sort of dental technician with an office in Dartmouth (a short drive from us). From what we heard he was just an average good guy who changed his demeanor at some point. A story we've all heard before in real life and on TV.
