Pasquale Anfossi (1727-97) is not an important figure, but man could he churn out a bunch of operas (about 80!!). Eventually he got burned out writing that genre and turned to sacred music. This overture to "Il Geloso in cimento" eventually was nicknamed by somebody as the "Venice Symphony" and it stuck.

Over two months ago, the overture to "Fidelio" was posted here. Fortunately for us (Beethoven not so much) he left us three more overtures for his one and only opera. So, here's our second posting: "Leonore Overture #1"

Here's another high-spirited opera overture that some of you do know. Hearing it is always a smile-inducing experience for me. Take it away, Dmitri Kabalevsky.

Felix Draeseke (1835-1913) was part of the "New German School" (aka Wagner/Liszt mold). Hans von Bulow once called him " a hard nut to crack". Maybe that's why he's less well known. Here's the overture to his 3-act opera "Gudrun" (1879-84). See if you agree with Herr Bulow.
